An Overview of Ecosia

Hi!

I don't remember when I heard about this search engine, but I think my sister randomly introduced me to it when exploring our chrome book's settings to realize that we could switch browsers whenever we wanted to.

Ecosia is a search engine that claims to plant one tree for every 45-50 searches you make. It used to have a personal tree tracker on the upper right corner of the search bar, but now it doesn't because it wants to inspire a community effort rather than an individual goal. Although this was a little disappointing for me at first, it does encourage users to change their mindset into a more family and community-oriented one, crucial in order to work together for a better planet.

But there's no reduction of results shown from it.

As of now, Ecosia's tree count is 218,354,268, which increases by less than a second. But more than that, as a German search engine, it has contributed over 89 million euros to climate action in general and has partnered with small organizations across the globe like Hommes et Terre in Senegal and others in Indonesia, Brazil, etc (over 35 countries) to not just plant trees but to find more sustainable agriculture methods, provide healthy food to the impoverished, provide jobs to those who need it, to reduce the use of palm oil and to bring back the rain forests, and so much more!

Not just that, but the very organization is powered using renewable solar energy (it's carbon negative) and plants native species where they are needed most, whether it's to restore damaged ecosystems or to prevent wildfires.

To fund these ambitious projects with 100% of their profits, Ecosia heavily depends on money advertisers pay to have their organizations featured on the browser. And as a private organization (which is B-Corp certified!), according to multiple organizations it doesn't sell data, and although it does track your search results it doesn't invest as much in personalizing them based on your data, increasing security.

So this is just an overview of Ecosia: if you want to learn more, visit the website and critics' reviews yourself and if you think it's worth the change (which I recommend as it also offers a user-friendly interface), then just download the app and extension and (maybe) make it your default browser! Let's do this, one tree at a time.
