How To Keep Going: 5 Tips to Stay on Track for Our Environment

Have you ever felt tired, bored, and/or reluctant to do something? Take school or work, for instance. You have this huge project that's due Monday morning and it's Saturday and you just want to sleep. Before you know it, it's Sunday evening and you're forced to work like crazy if you want to hand it in on time.

This is a very common thing: I'm pretty sure something similar has happened to almost everyone (including me) from time to time. And believe it or not, it can happen a lot, trust me, when it comes to campaigning for the environment.

As some of us might have experienced, change doesn't just happen overnight.

If you put up a poster up somewhere about saving the Earth, there's chance that many might ignore it. If you write up an entry about different topics in the field of climate change and sustainability for the weekly newspaper, you might feel like you don't have any ideas left after some time and ask yourself why you want to put in the effort. If you've organized a cleanup and you come to the same place next day to see still a lot of litter there, you might want to stop trying.

But even if this is the case, we all have to remember to keep believing. Give yourself that reminder whenever you feel down or what you're doing is not worth it: one day, it's going to work out. No matter if this goal means reducing the amount of litter in your neighborhood or influencing a dramatic increase in renewable energy use, if we keep trying and find new ways to promote what we're trying to prove to our audience, then we can achieve our goal to save the environment. To elaborate, here are 5 tips to help stay focused on our mission:

1. Encourage yourself. Stay positive and true to who you are, no matter if no one seems to believe or want to help on your idea at first. If it helps, give yourself positive, inspiring affirmations every day and remind yourself that what you're working for is unique, game - changing, and giving.

2. Don't set too many expectations. Many times, thinking of what will happen ahead of time or setting too many goals at once will make you frustrated and want to stop. For example, imagine that you're deciding to post on social media about an environmental topic you're really passionate about, and details for an eco meet - up that you're hosting. When the day comes, only two or three people show up when you've expected for at least 50. Especially when starting a campaign, it might be tough at first to gain a response from the public to support your actions, so something like this can be common: if it's happened to you, you're not alone. The only expectation you should set for yourself is to do your best, and that in itself can do wonders.

3. Give yourself you - time. Filling your weekly schedule with half a million things to do can oftentimes result in disappointment and stress because you might have only managed to do some of them. Remember, life can happen, so there's no point in planning too many things except if they're guidelines. Instead, if you like to plan out your week, plan according to what events take time and what events take less. Make sure to leave some space to nap, watch TV, draw, play video games, or even sit on your back steps to watch a sunset. This way, you'll be more energized and ready to get back to work on your environmental project.

4. Connect and share. You don't have to be too modest. Let friends, family, colleagues and/or classmates flatter and appreciate you for what you're working on and what progress you've made so far. If not, you can even add to your profile on social media about your interests and achievements. If you have any ongoing projects, be sure to connect with those you know to help you on it, and reach out to as many people as you can to join you on your journey. Even simply just connecting with other eco - lovers in an online community can inspire you to do more as there are many like - minded people who want to act on climate change and sustainability as well.

5. Remember your top favorite environmental activists. It's a very high chance that these people didn't start with all the support they could get from the government and from the public. They had to keep on trying, working hard every day no matter if people ignored them at first to reach and fulfill their desire to make a change in this topic. Their dedication and focus to their passion, a passion similar to yours, can encourage you to live up to your role models one day.
